After we left JJ & Laura's on Friday night, we went to our friends house (The Harrington's), where we met the Wilsons & Volkers to pit Buster the Pig. Shane & his friend lined the pit with the rocks & Melinda had picked up applewood from a local fruit farm to burn. The wood smelled delicious & we sat around for hours waiting for the 3am "pit" time to put Buster in....
At around 2:30 am, Dave & Eddie put together a concoction of apple juice & something else to inject into the pig. This helped flavor the pig & keep it moist. The pig was then wrapped in banana leaves & chicken wire to keep it all together while Buster cooked in the massive pit...
The rocks got knocked in & more banana leaves were laid on top of them. Buster was laid down on top of the leaves, covered with more leaves & then covered with huge sheets of plywood...
Then came the job of covering the plywood with dirt & making sure there was no smoke coming out of any of the cracks. By that time, Dylan was in "meltdown" mode & wouldn't go in the house to sleep with the rest of the kids... so I packed everyone up & we went home, showered & got to bed by around 4am. Val stayed with Dave to watch the pit until 5am to make sure there was absolutely NO smoke escaping the pit & burning up our Buster.... When he got home a little after 5, he was able to shower & get to bed too.... It was such a cool experience for our kids to see & we are really thankful to have such great people in our lives!
